CHAPTER 15

Lilly thought Roddy was joking about a fast car being the plan for getting out of the driveway, but he wasn’t. His garage was next to his house, an addition from the 1930s. The upstairs of the garage was an in-law apartment, or used to be. Like the rest of the house, it had fallen into disrepair. Lilly hadn’t been in the garage itself and was impressed by how much work Roddy had done—pouring a new floor, adding what looked to her like mechanic’s tools along the side. In addition to Roddy’s red Jaguar, he had an Aston Martin up on blocks and a Jeep in the third bay.

“Are you restoring that?” Lilly asked him while he held her door open, waiting until she was settled before closing it. Getting in and out of his car was a challenge for Lilly, but not for Roddy, who slid in and rubbed his hands together.

“I am,” he said. “It’s in terrible shape, but I’m in no rush. I enjoy restoring older cars. The puzzle of getting it going again calms my mind.”

“I see a Jeep joined the Jag,” Lilly said.

“I took your advice about winter driving to heart. The Jeep will be much more practical.”

Roddy turned the engine over and gave it a minute to warm up. “I will admit, this garage is ending up to be a wonderful asset that I didn’t expect. At first I was troubled, because it sits in the middle of the drive and was so large. As it turns out, it’s fairly good for privacy, and I’m able to indulge in projects like the Aston. The second floor is wonderful for storage.”

“You know, you could put up a trellis with a swinging gate between the garage and the wall to my house to really block off the backyard. People were peering in as I came through the door.”

“If we avoid having celebrities hiding out because another movie star was killed, that may help with privacy. But yes, let’s plan on that. It’s shady there, so I was planning on putting a gravel area, perhaps with a tool shed of sorts, in that area. I’ll add it to my project list. All right, the car should be warm. Ready?”

Lilly nodded. Roddy hit the remote to open the garage door and eased his car out. He waited until he had just cleared the door and hit the remote again. People started to gather at the end of his driveway. He revved his engine and started to move at what Lilly thought was an alarming speed. A couple of people stepped forward on the street, but he didn’t slow down. Camera lights went on, but still he kept his speed up. One person jumped back, and then everyone seemed to understand that he wasn’t stopping, so they made quick exits by running up on the embankments on either side of the driveway.

At the end, he paused for a moment, but when he saw that no cars were coming, he took a quick turn to the right.
